Is Maldives Still Worth the Journey?

Let’s be honest: it’s not an “easy weekend getaway.”

For most travelers, getting to the Maldives means at least two flights just to reach Malé (MLE) and that’s only the beginning. After you land, you typically add a seaplane or a domestic flight to reach your resort.

For Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa, the journey is part of what keeps it special: you’ll continue from Malé with an 1.5-hour domestic flight and 30-minute speedboat arranged by the resort.

So… is it still worth the journey?

Yes, but if you go in the dry season.

Because the Maldives in peak sun is transcendent. The Maldives in heavy rain is… TERRIBLE. It is simply NOT WORTH to save a couple of hundred dollars to go during Monsoon season. Most guides point to roughly November to April as the best window for drier conditions.

We visited once in April and once in November, and both trips delivered the kind of picture-perfect weather people imagine when they think “Maldives.”

Why the Park Hyatt Maldives, while there are so many resorts?

Because Hadahaa is the Maldives people hope for, not the Maldives built for a brochure.

It’s set in a remote atoll and surrounded by a 360-degree house reef. And unlike many newer “reclaimed” islands created through dredging, Hadahaa’s natural reef environment is a big part of why this place feels so alive the moment you step into the water.

But there’s another reason it stands out:

You can book Park Hyatt Maldives on points, for far less than the cash rate, without compromising the experience. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the step-by-step booking strategy, including what to do even if you currently have zero points.

The cost definitely climb fast, a 5-night stay in 2026 would be easily be over $20,000 USD.

  • Base Room Rate: $13,750 ($2,750/night avg.)

  • The "Hidden" Charges 28.7%: $4,066 (10% Service charges and 17% GST)

  • Mandatory Transfers: $1,320 (Domestic flight + Speedboat for two)

  • Estimated Dining: $2,500 ($250/night avg. pp)

Estimated Total: $21,536 USD

Some costs are unavoidable, transfers and dining especially. But in the next section, I’ll show you how to use World of Hyatt points to cut the biggest expense by a huge margin: the room, service charge and goods and service tax.

Point Arbitrage: Book the room with World of Hyatt points

The World of Hyatt program is one of the best when it comes to booking the Maldives on points. One big reason, World of Hyatt is one of the few programs still uses award chart point pricing for their hotels (while programs such as Marriott, Hilton and InterContinential have moved to dynamic pricing with no published chart).

Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa is a Category 7 hotel, which means award nights typically cost 25,000 to 35,000 points—with the lower end in off-peak periods and 35,000 points during peak season.

So for 35,000 points, you can book a Beach Villa that might be selling for around $2,750 per night. And because points bookings cover the room rate (instead of paying the full cash rate plus the usual add-ons), you can think of it as getting roughly $3,500+ of value once service charge and GST are factored in.

“But I have no Hyatt points…”

Totally fair, and that’s where this gets interesting.

Hyatt allows members to buy points directly. You can do this via the Hyatt “Earn” page:
world.hyatt.com/content/gp/en/earn.html

Look for the “Purchase Bonus Points” section. That’s where you can purchase points directly from Hyatt.

Now, Wait for a Points Sale

Unless you need to book immediately, it’s usually better to wait for a points promotion. Hyatt runs points discounts a few times a year—commonly 20% off, and occasionally 25% off.

Now, Wait for a Points Sale

Unless you need to book immediately, it’s usually better to wait for a points promotion. Hyatt runs points discounts a few times a year—commonly 20% off, and occasionally 25% off.

In practical terms, that can bring 35,000 points down to around $700, which is roughly $200 cheaper than buying points at full price.

But Hyatt only let you buy 55,000 points per year

That’s why buying during sales periods matters. Hyatt often doubles the purchase limit during promotions (as seen above, up to 110,000 points). Even then, it may still not be enough for a 5-night stay at 35,000 points per night, a total of 175,000 points.

Here’s the workaround: Hyatt allows points sharing. Since most people aren’t travelling to the Maldives solo, two people can each purchase points (to reach the combined 175,000), then combine them into a single account to make the booking.

You can’t do this online, but it’s a free service through Hyatt Customer Service. More details here:

Continue to Minimize Your Cost

The best version of this strategy is simple: earn the points instead of buying them. Here are three ways to build your Hyatt balance faster—without turning your Maldives trip into an expensive points purchase.

1. Professional & Personal Momentum: The Hyatt Pipeline

If your work involves travel—or you have other holidays planned before the Maldives—channel that spending into the Hyatt ecosystem. It’s one of the fastest ways to build “passive” points toward your Maldives fund.

Make a habit of prioritising Hyatt properties for upcoming stays. Whether it’s a Park Hyatt in a major city or a practical Hyatt Place on a road trip, every night brings you closer.

One important reminder: hotel programs typically won’t award points when you book through third-party sites. Book directly with Hyatt whenever possible, and always register for Hyatt’s quarterly promotions. These promos can meaningfully boost your earning rate (sometimes close to double), reducing how many points you’ll ever need to buy.

2. The Hyatt Co-branded Card

The World of Hyatt Credit Card offers up to 60,000 in sign-up bonus. While it does come with an annual fee of $95, it is significantly cheaper than purchasing 60,000 points directly from Hyatt. If your partner can also apply for a card, the math gets even better: two bonuses could mean 120,000 points for roughly ~$200 in annual fees, dramatically reducing the number of points you need to purchase.

3. The Chase Ultimate Rewards

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® or Reserve® cards often provide the superior long-term strategy due to their unparalleled flexibility. Unlike the co-branded Hyatt card, Sapphire points can be transferred to Hyatt but are not locked into one brand. They provide the agility to pivot to over a dozen airline and hotel partners if your plan changes.

Currently, Chase is offering 125,000 points for the Reserve or 75,000 for the Preferred. This is the single most cost-effective way to secure several nights at the Park Hyatt Maldives for just the cost of an annual fee.

As you finalize your plans for your Maldives trip, keep these three things in mind to ensure your experience matches your expectations. Personally, we had a wonderful time in the Maldives, thanks to Hyatt points accumulated through a combination of stay and purchase.

1. Pick your season first: dry season dates usually make the trip feel “worth it.”

2. Search award nights: Always look for room award availability first, before purchasing the points.

3. Prepare, budget and plan for transfers, meals and upgrade: points cover the beach villa, you can email the hotel to pay for an upgrade to the overwater villa.
