Shanghai

Shanghai is one of the easiest luxury-hotel cities in Asia because the city rewards different styles of stay. First-timers usually imagine the Bund and Lujiazui skyline, but repeat visitors often end up preferring neighbourhoods with better day-to-day eating, shopping and metro access.

Location, Location, Location

Lujiazui is the classic postcard pick for river views and big brand towers. Jing'an (St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton) works better if you want a central urban base with museums, offices and shopping. Xujiahui (Andaz, Courtyard, upcoming Kimpton)is more local and practical, with major malls, strong food options and easy metro connections, even if it sits farther from the Bund. Former French Concession addresses such as Hengshan Road (Twelve at Hengshan) and Ruijin Er Road (InterContinential Ruijin, Okaru Garden Hotel) trade skyline drama for leafy streets, historic villas and a slower, more residential version of Shanghai. We will be covering Hongta, a Luxury Collection hotel in the Marriott family.

From Pudong Airport

The Maglev plus metro remains the fastest way into town for many travellers, while taxis make more sense once you are carrying luggage or arriving late. Once you get off at Long Yang Road station from the Maglev, you can take metro line 2 to the Century Avenue station and walk for about 5 minutes. Alternative, take a taxi from Long Yang Road station and it costs about 30 CNY (~$5USD or ~$8 AUD)

Hongta, A Luxury Collection

Hongta, A Luxury Collection

The First St. Regis in China and Now one of the eight Luxury Collection Hotels

Hongta, which means Red Tower in Chinese, is literally red on its exterior. It is quite distinct from the surrounding building and easy to recoginse from afar. While it is part of a Luxury Collection hotel right now and since the Starwood Preferred Guests days, it was the first St. Regis hotel in China, later re-branded into Luxury Collection. It sits on Dongfang Road in a quieter part of Pudong, away from the trophy towers of Lujiazui. That sounds like a compromise, but it is exactly why some people will like it. This pocket is more functional than flashy, with offices, residential blocks and easier everyday pricing nearby, so the hotel works less as a first-time wow address and more as a savvy base for travellers who want space and Marriott value without paying Bund-adjacent rates.

Exterior and arrival

From the outside, Hongta still looks like a grand older-generation luxury hotel: a red-brick tower, large lobby volumes and a slightly theatrical sense of scale. The public spaces feel dated in places, but they also have personality that many newer business hotels lack. If you enjoy hotels that still announce themselves rather than disappearing into a generic glass box, the arrival experience has more character than the price point suggests.

Check in

Check in was very smooth. They took my passport and informed the room has already been upgraded to the suite as Marriott Platinum. Having stayed here multiple times, the difference between the standard room and suite is the separate living room. The bathroom is identical. As Marriott Platinum benefits, the room comes with Executive Lounge access as well as complimentry breakfast on the ground floor, opposite the check in area.

The $20,000 Calculation: Why Paying Cash Hurts

While the cash rate at the Park Hyatt Maldives varies by season, during peak dry season, it is usually over $1,000 to $3,000+ per night.

The Room

The room story is similar. Inventory is generously sized by Shanghai standards, and that extra space is the main reason to book. Decor leans classic rather than contemporary, so come expecting an older luxury product instead of a newly sharpened design hotel. Beds, work space and bathrooms still make the stay easy, especially for longer visits or travellers who value square footage more than trend-led finishes.

“But I have no Hyatt points…”

Totally fair, and that’s where this gets interesting.

Hyatt allows members to buy points directly. You can do this via the Hyatt “Earn” page:

Look for the “Purchase Bonus Points” section. That’s where you can purchase points directly from Hyatt.

Now, Wait for a Points Sale

Unless you need to book immediately, it’s usually better to wait for a points promotion. Hyatt runs points discounts a few times a year—commonly 20% off, and occasionally 25% off.

In practical terms, that can bring 35,000 points down to around $700, which is roughly $200 cheaper than buying points at full price.

But Hyatt only let you buy 55,000 points per year

That’s why buying during sales periods matters. Hyatt often doubles the purchase limit during promotions (as seen above, up to 110,000 points). Even then, it may still not be enough for a 5-night stay at 35,000 points per night, a total of 175,000 points.

Here’s the workaround: Hyatt allows points sharing. Since most people aren’t travelling to the Maldives solo, two people can each purchase points (to reach the combined 175,000), then combine them into a single account to make the booking.

You can’t do this online, but it’s a free service through Hyatt Customer Service. More details here:

Continue to Minimize Your Cost

The best version of this strategy is simple: earn the points instead of buying them. Here are three ways to build your Hyatt balance faster—without turning your Maldives trip into an expensive points purchase.

1. Professional & Personal Momentum: The Hyatt Pipeline

If your work involves travel—or you have other holidays planned before the Maldives—channel that spending into the Hyatt ecosystem. It’s one of the fastest ways to build “passive” points toward your Maldives fund.

Make a habit of prioritising Hyatt properties for upcoming stays. Whether it’s a Park Hyatt in a major city or a practical Hyatt Place on a road trip, every night brings you closer.

One important reminder: hotel programs typically won’t award points when you book through third-party sites. Book directly with Hyatt whenever possible, and always register for Hyatt’s quarterly promotions. These promos can meaningfully boost your earning rate (sometimes close to double), reducing how many points you’ll ever need to buy.

2. The Hyatt Co-branded Card

One of the first cards that comes to mind is the World of Hyatt Credit Card. If you plan to stay at Hyatt properties, a Hyatt co-branded card is a simple way to turn everyday spending into Hyatt points.

This becomes even more compelling when the card offers a sign-up bonus of up to 60,000 points. While it does come with a $95 annual fee, that cost is often far less than buying 60,000 points directly from Hyatt.

And if your partner is able to apply as well, the value can increase significantly: two sign-up bonuses could total 120,000 points for roughly ~$200 in annual fees, which can dramatically reduce—or even eliminate—the number of points you’d otherwise need to purchase.

3. The Chase Ultimate Rewards

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® or Reserve® cards often provide the superior long-term strategy due to their unparalleled flexibility. Unlike the co-branded Hyatt card, Sapphire points can be transferred to Hyatt but are not locked into one brand. They provide the agility to pivot to over a dozen airline and hotel partners if your plan changes.

Currently, Chase is offering 125,000 points for the Reserve or 75,000 for the Preferred. This is the single most cost-effective way to secure several nights at the Park Hyatt Maldives for just the cost of an annual fee.

Final Takeaways

As you finalize your plans for your Maldives trip, keep these three things in mind to ensure your experience matches your expectations. Personally, we had a wonderful time in the Maldives, thanks to Hyatt points accumulated through a combination of stay and purchase.

1. Pick your season first: dry season dates usually make the trip feel “worth it.”

2. Search award nights: Always look for room award availability first, before purchasing the points.

3. Prepare, budget and plan for transfers, meals and upgrade: points cover the beach villa, you can email the hotel to pay for an upgrade to the overwater villa.

If you wish to see this strategy, booking process and stay experience, you can visit our YouTube Channel to view a full walkthrough of the points-booking process, as well as in depth look of our Park Hyatt Maldives experience of the beach villa and over the water villa.
